Job Description Summary:

As a Medical Director in the Medical Affairs team, you will provide clinical expertise and leadership for the development and implementation of medical affairs strategies. This role involves providing clinical guidance and support to internal and external stakeholders to advance the strategic initiatives of Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) and the BCBS Plans. You will play a pivotal role in thought leadership, policy consultation, and the development of innovative solutions that enable BCBS Plans to lead in the healthcare industry.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Medical Affairs Leadership: Lead the development and execution of medical affairs strategies in alignment with BCBSA’s goals and initiatives, providing clinical expertise to both internal and external strategic efforts.
  • Reference Medical Consultation: Collaborate with other medical directors to guide the development of evidence-based medical policies and ensure the alignment of medical practices with industry standards.
  • Communication Management & Process Improvement: Oversee and improve the internal communication process related to timelines, evidentiary review, and policy deliverables. Support the communication of BCBSA Board strategies, including in areas like precision medicine and medical policy management.
  • Thought Leadership & Relationships: Cultivate strong relationships with Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) and other healthcare professionals, serving as a clinical representative for BCBSA to strengthen its leadership position in the healthcare community.
  • Strategic Initiatives: Contribute to the development of strategies for product/platform development and business growth, including decisions regarding recruitment, retention, and opportunities in pharmaceutical and medical device industries.

Required Education, Certifications, and Experience:

  • Education: M.D. or D.O.
  • Certifications: Valid medical license and board certification.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 5 years of experience in health plans, specifically as a Medical Director or Medical Consultant.
    • Experience working with key healthcare stakeholders including consumers, providers, businesses, and media.
    • Knowledge and experience in medical policy development and medical management practices.
  • Skills:
    • Strong knowledge of how clinical operations interact with other departments such as medical management, marketing, legal, and provider relations.
    • Effective team player, particularly in cross-functional teams.
    • Strong written communication and presentation skills.
    • Experience in working with Medical Directors and clinical operations.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Advanced Degree: M.P.H. (Master of Public Health) or another relevant advanced degree is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Clinical Operations: Experience in medical policy implementation, claims operations, and healthcare provider relations.

Compensation:

The salary for this position ranges from $100,000 to $200,000 annually, depending on experience, qualifications, and location. Exact compensation will vary and may include an annual bonus incentive pay.
