Target is hiring a Lead Engineer to join its Red Team, a critical function that uncovers security risks through adversary simulation, providing a proactive approach to securing Target’s technology infrastructure. As part of the Cybersecurity team, you will help identify and mitigate threats by simulating real-world cyber-attacks, collaborating with internal teams, and driving organizational improvement.

About the Red Team:

The Red Team is dedicated to testing the security of Target’s systems by emulating cyber-attacks. The team works on adversary emulation, providing training for defenders, and collaborating across teams to improve security processes and technology. As a Lead Engineer, you will influence team direction, execute operations, and help educate internal teams on security best practices.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Adversary Emulation: Design and execute adversary simulation operations to surface security risks in the organization.
  • Research & Development: Conduct research into threat actor tactics, techniques, and procedures to develop proof-of-concept tools and playbooks.
  • Bypass Security Controls: Identify vulnerabilities by bypassing preventative and detective security controls.
  • Collaboration: Work with multiple teams, including Cyber Security Incident Response, Threat Intelligence, and Threat Hunting, to identify and improve security risks.
  • Training & Mentorship: Lead and train Red Team operators, providing clear communication and technical training.
  • Technical Support: Assist defenders by presenting findings and operational work clearly and professionally.
  • Process Improvement: Prioritize continuous improvement and refine tools, procedures, and engagement processes.
  • Tool Development: Write and read code (Python, C#, Rust, Go, etc.) to accomplish Red Team goals.
  • Team Leadership: Manage work effectively in project management tools (e.g., GitHub, JIRA) and lead a high-performing team.

Qualifications:

  • Experience: Minimum of 4 years of experience in offensive security or defensive security.
  • Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of Red Team techniques, including knowledge of real-world cyber-attack tactics and security controls.
  • Skills: Proficiency in Python, C#, Rust, Go, or C programming languages. Ability to replicate the tools and techniques of real-world threat actors.
  • Problem Solving: Ability to creatively subvert systems and solve difficult problems in a timely manner.
  • Collaboration: Strong collaboration skills and experience working cross-functionally with other teams (Incident Response, Detection, Blue Teams).
  • Communication: Ability to clearly and respectfully communicate technical issues and mentor others.
  • Adaptability: Ability to respond to rapidly changing priorities and requirements.

Desirable Skills:

  • Adversary Emulation: Deep experience in adversary emulation and Red Team tactics.
  • Incident Response: Experience working on or with Blue Teams, including Incident Response or Detection teams.
  • Security Trends: Knowledge of current Threat Actor trends and their impact on security.
  • Large Organizations: Experience working in large, complex organizations with advanced security systems.

Work Environment:

This position can be performed Remote or Hybrid (“Flex for Your Day”), based on team and role needs. Remote work allows full-time work from home, with occasional travel to Target HQ (up to 4 times per year).
