Responsibilities
  • Ensures a high-quality customer experience with regard to baggage transfer through a strong foundation of experience the airline industry and in the baggage operations environment.
  • This experience allows the shift manager to quickly figure out where the process has failed to quickly rectify the issue for resuming normal operations.
  • Expected to pitch in to keep operations flowing and step in to figure out the source of any problems
  • Directs and coordinates department activities and is responsible for running a safe and effective operation. This is accomplished by communicating with peers and team members, both within their immediate department, as well as, with other departments, and by administering compliance with company policies and procedures.
  • Provides their team with necessary tools, resources and training to meet or exceed all operational performance goals
  • Responsibilities include review and analysis of operations reports, records, and directives, and confers with supervisors to obtain data required for planning department activities, such as new commitments, status of work in progress, and problems encountered.
  • Assigns or delegates responsibility for specified work or functional activities and disseminates policy to supervisors
  • Gives work directions, resolves problems, and sets deadlines to ensure timely completion of work
  • Resolves operational challenges during tour of duty which includes working in the operation during peak or irregular periods
  • Through the use of cross-functional teams, the Shift Manager may generate and implement quality improvement ideas
  • Actively seeks cost reduction ideas, and monitors lost time
  • Coordinates activities of the baggage operations team with related activities of other departments to ensure efficiency and economy
  • Evaluates current procedures and practices for accomplishing baggage service objectives in order to develop and implement improved procedures and practices
  • Ensures compliance with all operations (safety/government requirements, company rules and regulations) during tour of duty
  • Investigates discrepancies and compiles statistical data for compliance purposes
  • Coaches and counsels personnel and provides guidance to their team on baggage operations and performance issues
  • Encourages employee teamwork to generate and implement individual and team’s best ideas
  • Coordinates various aspects of the operation including scheduling, hiring, and training
  • Evaluates team performance through corporate quality control measurements, with unconditional bias, such as observations, feedback, data and customer complaints and compliments
  • Provides support to baggage operations supervisors as they perform their required tasks; helping them to solve on-the-job challenges while also providing ongoing training. In addition to supervising current team member, the shift manager is also responsible for training new team members and leading new hire orientation.
  • Assigns each baggage operations supervisor tasks based on their competencies and the needs of the team to meet goals
  • Utilizes the backgrounds and talents of baggage supervisors to enhance their abilities and groom them for future management roles
  • Develops a work environment that encourages compliance with company, state and federal safety and employment guidelines
  • Sets performance metrics for each team member and then work with team members to make sure that all metrics are met. Help staff resolve on-the-job challenges
  • Coordinates with vendors for timely delivery of office and other related supplies and operational tools
  • Ensures the effective start and closing of daily shift operations. Informs the next Shift Manager about pending tasks
  • Reviews/reports GSE maintenance, safety, operational and training needs
  • Develops efficient work methods, and collaborates with peers, supervisors, upper management contract labor groups and other departments to increase productivity while maintaining the company’s safety record

  • College degree or equivalent work experience
  • A valid state driver’s license may be required by local airport authorities
  • Previous proven supervisory or managerial experience of various workgroups including management, non-management, and contract labor groups (3+ years)
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office software, including proficiency in Sabre (RES/PNR review), Net Tracer, Ramp Operations (Bag Tracker+, Bag Matrix, etc.), PRIME, GET, Tracer review and analysis of baggage mishandling, Staff admin and other company software
  • Proficiency in airline operations (above and below the wing)
  • Previous working experience demonstrating strong analytical and organizational skills with the ability to study large pieces of data to prepare numerical and graphical depictions of performance
  • When applicable, may be required to work rotating shifts, nights and weekends including working extra hours when there are operation needs such as weather delays
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Must possess the legal right to work in the United States
  • Must be able to read, write, fluently speak, and understand the English language
  • Previous cross functional airline industry experience
